Chapter 1 - Snow
Operation Strix was going well.
Twilight had managed to infiltrate Donovan Desmond's inner circle and it was only a matter of time before he found out whether he had plans to initiate a war. Once this happened, he would finally be able to move onto his next mission.
His instinct told him Strix was almost over - three to five more months at the most. Then, he’d have a clean exit; a fake death, a staged accident perhaps. It was almost time for Loid Forger to die.
At a year a half, it had been the longest mission of his career. He’d be lying if he said he wouldn’t miss this life and…
“Papa, let’s go to the park!” Anya called.
Loid looked out the window, it was the middle of winter, everything looked dead, and it was already getting dark, even though it was still early. It was cold and he didn’t really want to go out, but lately, he felt like pleasing his daughter more than usual.
“Alright, but it will be a short outing,” he warned her grabbing his coat.
Yor was still at work, so it was only the two of them and Bond walking towards the park.
“Where does she get so much energy?
” he muttered watching her run freely as soon as they got there.
She was still so young. He wondered how Anya would be as an adult. Would she keep that cheerful demeanor? What kind of profession or job she’d choose? Would she get married?
He’d been part of her life only for a small amount of time compared to a long lifespan, but that girl had attached to him and considered him her father. Loid felt a twinge of remorse. There were so many things he would miss out.
“Loid! Anya!” a familiar voice called from afar.
It was a figure wrapped in a pink coat and a chunky white scarf.
“Mama!” yelled Anya happily running towards Yor.
Loid smiled instinctively. He was also pleased to see Yor after a long day. He’d gotten used to their days together. Loid and Yor Forger had become more than a simple agreement; now they were partners and friends.
“Hi!” Yor greeted Loid while hugging Anya. “I was on my way home when I saw you.”
“Hi, Yor. Welcome.” He smiled back at her.
Loid would never admit this to anyone but seeing Yor after work had slowly turned into his favorite part of the day. There was something about her voice that made him feel…what was the right word? He couldn’t really tell. Calm? Happy? Safe? He’d tried in vain to find the precise word many times without succeeding.
“How was your day, Anya? Were you a good girl today?” Yor asked.
“Yes, mama!” the little girl giggled. “I was good today.”
“Oh, I know you were good. You’re always good,” she said placing a bunch of kisses on her face.
Loid shook his head smiling. Yor really was a doting mother. Anya was lucky.
He was going to miss this life.
I don’t want to leave
, he caught himself thinking.
When one of these thoughts happened, he was always quick to suppress it and remind himself he wasn't Loid Forger, he was Twilight, a spy.
However, this time, he got distracted.
“It’s snowing!” Anya beamed, extending her hand to catch a snowflake, still in her mother's arms.
Anya looked so little clinging to Yor’s neck, her eyes were shining because of something as simple as snow.
Yor's eyes were shining too, her eyes looked like red stars. He couldn't stop staring. She wore her hair down (he always liked it better that way), her cheeks and nose were pink, while her lips looked soft, plump, and cherry color. She was a beautiful woman, he’d always known that, but that day, when snowflakes got caught on her long eyelashes, she looked more beautiful than ever.
Before he could stop himself, he leaned and kissed Anya’s forehead. Then, carried away by the moment, he turned to Yor, attempting to do the same, but instead of kissing her forehead, he ended up kissing her lips.
Yor didn’t jump, fidget, ran, or hit him, as she would have some time ago. Instead, she closed her eyes.
A while ago, he would have pulled back, full of instant apologies, but that day he was bewitched by the moment, and he didn’t do any of that.
Instead, he lied (to himself) by saying that kissing his wife was part of his mission too.
