Chapter 28 - Peering Out of the Keyhole
It can be so easy to slip into complacency as a physician. Diagnoses are confirmed, treatments are successful, and patients recover. The more successful cases you stack, the more comfortable you become and, dare I say, the more likely your ego is to blossom.
He wrapped you up nice and snug with your education that Arthur Helfen. The knowledge he bestowed upon you is both your shield and sword. It protects you against this cruel world, yet you wield it like a weapon against all things that intend bodily harm: disease, wounds, neglect.
They were difficult to wield the first time they were handed to you, weren 't they? They were heavy. You fumbled them a few times. You made mistakes. But soon, they had become a natural extension of your body, almost weightless in your grasp. It became second nature to parry the blows that came your way.
Instinctual.
A reflex.
You know just what to do now, don 't you? Even if that means doing nothing at all.
