Chapter 25 - and my beloved is mine
Loid has often heard that the truth will set one free, but being a spy, he 's never put much stock in the proverb. At best, the truth will put a bounty on his head. At worst, it 'll find him dead in a ditch somewhere obscure where he 'll rot until he 's nothing but fertilizer for the floor.
He finds the sentiment especially grating now that he 's owned up to what is perhaps the greatest sin anybody in espionage can commit: being emotionally invested in the target. It 's the most surefire way to muck up an entire operation, so of course, after years of flawless missions, he would find himself bungling the most important one of his career thus far.
